Sashimi grade Ahi Tuna steaks are a great source of proteins and nutrients such as vitamin C,D, and zinc. Ahi tuna, also known as yellowfin tuna, is a popular seafood choice known for its rich flavour and firm texture. It's commonly used in sushi and sashimi dishes but is also delicious when seared and served rare or medium-rare.

When preparing ahi tuna steak, it's important to start with a high-quality piece of fish. Look for sushi-grade tuna if you plan to serve it rare or medium-rare. Here's a simple and elegant way to prepare ahi tuna steak:

Ingredients:

  • 2 ahi tuna steaks, about 1 inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey or brown sugar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (optional)
  • Green onions, thinly sliced, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for searing)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Marinade:
  2. In a bowl, whisk together soy sauce, sesame oil, honey or brown sugar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and optional sesame seeds. This marinade will add depth of flavor to the tuna.
  3. Marinate the Tuna:
  4. Place the tuna steaks in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Let the tuna marinate for about 15-30 minutes in the refrigerator. Be mindful not to marinate for too long, as the acidity of the marinade can affect the texture of the fish.
  5. Sear the Tuna:
  6. Heat a heavy-bottomed skillet or a cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Add vegetable oil to the pan. When the oil is hot, remove the tuna steaks from the marinade (save the marinade for later) and season both sides with salt and pepper. Sear the tuna for about 1-2 minutes on each side for rare to medium-rare, depending on the thickness of the steaks. The goal is to sear the outside while keeping the inside rare and cool.
  7. Deglaze and Serve:
  8. Remove the seared tuna from the pan and let it rest for a minute. In the same pan, pour the reserved marinade and let it cook for a minute or two, allowing it to thicken slightly. Pour this sauce over the tuna steaks.
  9. Garnish and Serve:
  10. Slice the tuna against the grain into thin slices. Arrange the slices on a plate, drizzle with the sauce, and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.

Enjoy your ahi tuna steak with a side of steamed rice, stir-fried vegetables, or a fresh salad for a well-rounded and flavourful meal.
